BREAKING NEWS: ESCONDIDO, Calif. – A 69-year-old Army veteran known throughout his Southern California neighborhood for his prominent display of American flags and pro-Trump memorabilia has died after being violently attacked outside his home, prompting a murder prosecution and renewed questions about the circumstances surrounding the assault.
Kerry George Sheron was attacked on May 20 near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido, according to police. Officers responding to reports of an assault found Sheron suffering from severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition for several days before dying on May 24.
Authorities arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, who initially faced charges including attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats and battery. After Sheron died, prosecutors amended the case and filed a murder charge. Butler has pleaded not guilty.
