BUCHAREST, Romania — A tense military response unfolded in the Black Sea on Aug. 20 after a small maritime drone was discovered drifting just a few hundred meters from Romania’s strategically important Neptun Alpha offshore gas platform, prompting authorities to scramble two F-16 fighter jets and deploy an explosive-ordnance disposal team.

With hundreds of workers operating around the offshore energy infrastructure, Romanian authorities moved rapidly to assess the potential threat.
Two Romanian Air Force F-16s were dispatched to the area. One fighter engaged the maritime drone with its onboard cannon, striking the target. The incident took a more serious turn when Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță said the drone was carrying explosives.
According to Romanian authorities, officials analyzed information gathered during the military response and coordinated the operation to eliminate the potential danger to personnel and critical infrastructure. The Ukrainian side, contacted through a recently established direct communication channel, reportedly confirmed that the drone was not of Ukrainian origin. (AGERPRES)
Romania has not publicly established who launched the drone or how it reached the area.

⚠️ Growing Concern Around Neptun Deep
The incident is particularly significant because the drone appeared near Neptun Deep, one of Romania’s most important energy projects.
The project is being developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, with the Neptun Alpha production platform recently installed offshore.
